Over 5 days (March 9-13) I will be teaching a series of 5 Sacred Energy Arts workshops & a 5 Element Qigong 3 Day Intensive that will assist you in awakening your body’s wisdom, strength and intelligence.

Workshop 1

balance and flow: an introduction to sacred energy arts

This introduction to Sacred Energy Arts will focus on building strength and grace; emphasis will be placed on cultivating stillness in motion, movement in meditation and the breath. This moving balance practice encourages and invokes seamless and fluid transitions from one asana to the next.

Suitable for level 1-2 or above
Some movement / fitness experience recommended

Workshop 2

young bamboo: strength and flexibility

This class emphasizes developing strength and flexibility, physically and mentally through Tapas (acts of will that create heat). By extending ourselves energetically and physically, we immediately become connected and supported. Our practice deepens and is nourished. This practice will explore your choice of themes, whether the focus is on hips & hamstrings, back bends & inversions, or balances & twists.

Workshop 3

power and stability :hips and hamstrings

This workshop will explore the hips and their six ranges of motion. Hips and hamstrings are the both the stability and the driving force to moving forward in life. Their health and harmony is essential to aging with grace. We will discuss common injuries associated with this part of the body and more importantly injury prevention. Learn to build strength and fluidity while hitting your stride.

Workshop 4

trust and communication: partner yoga

Consciously working with another person translates into useful life skills. Partner Yoga deepens our sensitivity and awareness. We will focus on breath, postural alignment & placement. Partners will be chosen from all who participate in the class. For some of the exercises partners will be chosen by size and for others partners will be chosen at random. Changing partners from exercise to exercise is encouraged. Ultimately, working with partners allows us to learn more about ourselves. This is a potent, enlightening and really fun workshop. We will work with Down Dog, Backbends, Forward Bends, Twists, Balances, Handstands and more!

Workshop 5

breath inside the breath: breath and meditation

This workshop focuses on two primary breathing practices: the Taoist Breath or embryonic breath, also known as the “breath of the immortals,” and Ujjayii Pranayama. Both breathing practices help to relieve stress, focus the mind, and cultivate energy. We will then explore various meditations from China & India: Lying, sitting, moving and standing meditations. These practices build mindfulness and energy in many different positions and with a wide variety of movement. Meditation is a very effective way to reduce stress, calm the nervous system, balance and harmonize destructive emotions, sharpen the senses and promote radiant health.

5 Element Qigong 3 Day Intensive

Qigong is the Chinese practice of energy management through breath, meditation, and body movement.

This is the fundamental training of Chinese traditional healing arts. By following the requirements for the standing stance we cultivate Qi and strengthen the body. In traditional Chinese arts there are 5 elements: fire, water, metal, earth and wood. Each of these elements corresponds with energy pathways (meridians) that are inside ourselves. The goal of this inmmersion is to learn the basic tools to open meridians, balance the 5 elements and improve circulation of Qi (life force) and blood. Other benefits of this practice include balance, stress reduction, and functional strength and flexibility.

Matthew Cohen has been fully immersed in the study and application of Martial, Yogic and Healing Arts for over 30 years. His teachings are at once ancient, progressive, secular and sacred. His integrated approach to healing is potent and accessible drawing from Yoga, Qigong, Tai Chi, and Martial Arts. Sacred Energy Arts Flow is the culmination and evolution of Matthew’s extensive training in all of these practices and teachings.
